WildFire - Chapter 9

9.

After a week, Nola was healing well enough to start physical therapy. The lavender nurse helped her sit in a wheelchair and pushed her to a wide room. Several men and women were exercising already when she arrived, all of them missing a limb. She smelled sweat and tears. She spotted Pierre in the back, near a couple of walking rails. He welcomed her with a wide smile and a bear hug.

« Hello girl ! »

« Pierre, nice to see you ! What are you doing here ? »

« I’m your trainer. I got my diploma after my accident, so I can help people. »

Nola had ambivalent feelings. On one hand she was happy it was him, because she knew and trusted him. But on the other hand, she didn’t want to show him any more weakness. He had seen so much of that already.

« Time to get up and walk ! »

Nola had started to get used to being amputated, but walking ? She didn’t know if she was ready for that. She hadn’t set her left foot on the floor yet. Like looking at it, it frightened her, the new feeling.

« You have to get used to standing on your stub before getting your prosthesis so you can find your balance. Have you had any pain lately ? »

« Some, it’s rather dull so I’m off opioids. »

« Are you sure it’s a good idea ? PT can be hard, and wake up the pain. »

« Don’t worry about the pain, I can handle it. I’d rather handle the pain than use painkillers. »

« All right. Have you tried standing up on both your feet ? »

Nola winced. She was a bit ashamed.

« No, not yet. »

« No problem. »

He positioned her wheelchair at the end of the railings and asked her to stand up. She put all her weight on her right foot, pulled on the poles and stood up. Her leg felt weak after all this time in bed but she remained upright. Her left foot was bandaged as it would be in the prosthetic foot. Pierre looked at her.

« Now you put your stub on the ground. It is going to feel weird, but it's like going to the meeting. You have to make that first step. »

Slowly, Nola put her stump on the ground but she didn't put any weight on it. Pierre saw what she was doing.

« It's a good step. Now feel the ground under your foot. »

She thought that it did indeed feel weird. Her heel was right where it was supposed to be, but since she didn't have her forefoot and toes anymore, her balance was all wrong. Pierre encouraged her.

« Come on, put some weight on it now. Check how it feels. »

She did as he asked and leaned on her left side. It felt wrong. What was left of her foot didn't move the way it used to. The muscles and ligaments had been reattached in a different way that would eventually allow her to walk, but for the moment she didn't like the perception she had. She wasn't used to her new shape yet and this feeling didn't make things easier.

She remained between the rails for about half an hour, testing her stump and her balance, making tentative steps to walk before Pierre decided that was enough for now. Back in her room, the pains woke up in her foot, but she closed her eyes and concentrated on the scents.

The next three days, Nola came back to the PT room twice a day, gritting her teeth and making progress until Pierre was satisfied and told her it was time for her to get an artificial foot. A lemon-smelling man came with a prosthesis looking very much like a real foot. The week before they had made a mold of her right foot that was used to make this one. The man slipped it on her stub and suddenly it was like she had two feet again. Nola got up, impatient to try it out… and almost fell down. This foot looked like a real one but could hardly play the part. She’d have to get used to that too.

Oliver showed up two days later in the PT room with a surprise.

« Ollie ! »

« Hey Nola. How are you doing ? »

« Not bad actually. »

« You got your new foot. »

« Yes ! It's still hard to walk, but I'm working on it. »

Pierre and Oliver shook hands.

« She's making great progress, I'm proud of her. »

« Thanks, coach. What's in the box ? »

« It's for you. The Applied Sciences Division has a prosthetics department and I’ve asked them to work on a prototype. »

The box that contained… a foot. But unlike the one provided by the hospital, this one was made of a transparent silicone exterior filled with metal and wires.

« Oh, my gosh, Ollie ! It looks like something out of a sci-fi movie ! »

« Want to try it on ? »

« Sure ! »

She slipped the bionic foot on her stump and it fitted just right. She stood up, checked her balance, put some weight on her left leg and took a step.

« This is amazing !  »

« See the small rods ? They’re imitating the bones in the foot and toes. Each of them has its own servo drive and can act in autonomy. Felicity could explain this better than me. »

« Felicity ? »

« My… IT girl. We work together. »

« Oh. Okay. »

Nola kept walking slowly up and down the path, analyzing each movement, rolling and unrolling her new foot.

« It’s a prototype, so it probably needs some adjustments. »

« Some, yes, but it’s pretty good already. No comparison with the rubber one ! »

She took a deep breath, lifted her hands from the railings and took a step unsupported. She wobbled a bit but she took another step.

« That’s gonna do it ! »

Oliver moved the end of the walk and caught her in his arms when she arrived. She laughed and hugged him hard.

« Thank you so much ! This foot is amazing ! »

Pierre admired the prosthetic.

« She’s healing quite well, so I'm recommending leaving the hospital next week. »

« Already ? »

« You're autonomous enough to go back home, Nola. You need to recover your routine. »

« I suppose. »

« The hospital is a safe place, and it's normal to want safety. But you need to learn how to take care of your new self. »

« If you don't want to be alone, you can come at home. You can do all your physical therapy in the gym and the pool. And you can have your own room. »

Oliver bent down to whisper in her ear.

« Unless you want to share mine. »

Nola looked mischievous.

« What would your mom say about that ? »

« We don't have to tell her. Plus she lives in the other aisle. »

Nola laughed.

« Why not ? »

« I'll arrange everything. »

They exchanged a tender kiss that would have turned warmer if they had been alone.

WildFire - Chapter 8

8.

The nurse pushed the drug in her IV, and Nola felt herself start to float. She was still awake, but her sense of smell was dulled. Pierre had left just a moment ago, saying he would come back later, so grapefruit hung in the air. But still no rainforest. Nola closed her eyes and started to drift.

Oliver rushed through the corridor, looking for Nola’s room. He had been so preoccupied with the Undertaking he had almost forgotten her operation was today. He saw a nurse push a bed in front of her, recognised the red hair under the cap.

« Wait ! »

He bent over her and put his hand on her cheek.

« Nola. I’m here. »

Her lids were so heavy, but she managed to open them. Finally, the scent she had been waiting for.

« You got this, you're strong. And I’ll be here when you wake up. »

He put a soft kiss on her lips and let the nurse push her into the OR. Nola fell asleep surrounded by the green.

Oliver stayed in the hospital. The coffee was terrible, but he was here for her, and discomfort was the least of his worries. He thought about what Nola had told him, about responsibilities. The list he had taken from his father's body was what kept him going, what gave him purpose. For five years, he'd had but one idea in his mind, get home. And once home, make sure wrongdoers would pay for their crimes. His father had seen the errors of his ways, but didn't have time to correct his deeds. So it was his duty to honor his father's wishes and make sure justice prevailed.

Dr Kellerman looked confident when he came out of the OR a couple of hours later.

« The surgery went as well as expected. She's in good health, so if everything goes well, she should be back on her own feet in a couple of weeks. »

« Is she awake yet ? »

« No, but you can go see her for a minute as soon as she's in ICU. »

« Thank you doctor. »

Through the window of her room, Oliver watched Nola sleep. She looked paler than usual. His gaze dropped on the other side of the bed. The sheet on the left side was definitely lower. And he did feel responsible.

Nola didn't want to wake up. She was drifting in scents and colors, and though in her mind they were all blurry, it was better than waking up and facing the harsh reality that she wasn't whole anymore. She wanted to go back to her life before the kidnapping. But that would mean no rainforest, and she couldn't bear the idea. She smelled the green amongst the hospital grey and thought some people were really stubborn.

« Come on, Nola, I know you can hear me. Wake up ! »

Oliver took her hand in his and sat on the bed. Nola sighed and looked at him.

« Hello Sleeping Beauty. »

She had to smile.

« Hello Robin Hood. »

His smile froze.

« Sorry, the medication is making me babble. »

« How do you feel ? »

« Fuzzy. »

« I'm allowed five minutes with you. »

« It's usually all you need, right ? »

Oliver laughed. His phone rang, and he checked it.

« Sorry, I have to go. But I'll be back later, okay ? »

« Whenever you want, I'm not going anywhere. »

Nola closed her eyes again once Oliver had left. She didn't want to look, didn't want to see. The pain was erased by the drugs, and she couldn't feel her left leg, so she let the slumber take her under again. She lost the rhythm of night and day. Nurses and doctors came and went, washed her, changed the bandage on her stub. Somebody talked about measurements and prosthetic foot.

She didn't know how much time had passed when Oliver came again. And this time, he wasn't alone, Pierre had joined him. They had reduced the amount of painkillers she received, so her mind was clearer and her sense of smell more accurate. It felt good to see them. Oliver closed the door and leaned on it while Pierre sat down in the chair beside the bed and turned to Nola.

« We have a problem, girl. »

Nola's face closed.

« Doctor K. told me you haven't seen your foot, that you always close your eyes when they come to do the stump care. »

She remained silent, looking far in front of her.

« You have to face the truth, you have to look at your stub and learn how to care for it. That's the way it works. I know how hard it is. But you don't have to do it alone. »

Nola turned to him, saw courage and strength.

« I'm scared. »

« I know. »

He took her hand and held tight while her eyes were filling up. Oliver sat down on her other side and enfolded her in his arms.

« We're here with you. »

Nola closed her eyes, inhaled deeply the rainforest and the grapefruit, and opened her eyes again. Oliver pulled the sheet and uncovered her severed foot. It was tightly bandaged, and noticeably shorter beside her right foot. Her breath hitched and tears fell on her cheeks. She started sobbing silently. Both men couldn't help it but cry with her. Despite his numerous wounds, Oliver couldn’t imagine what it was like to have a part of himself missing. He could barely look at her amputated foot. Pierre wiped his cheeks.

« Good girl ! »

She tried to move, but the bandages didn’t allow for it. She moved her right toes and thought she wouldn’t be able to do that anymore with her left.

« How do you feel ? »

« I don’t know. Weird. »

« I promise you, one day soon you will see yourself as whole. I’m not saying you won’t miss your foot, hell, I miss my legs every day. But it will feel like yourself. »

The nurse who came in smelled like lavender. Nola had scented her before, but she couldn’t remember her face.

« Oh, good, you’re ready ! »

Oliver put a kiss in her hair and left. Pierre remained to help her deal with what was coming. Nola didn’t like touching her scar, but she clenched her teeth and learned the right way to care for her stump.

« I’m very proud of you, Nola. Our meeting’s tonight, I’ll tell everybody I saw you. We’re all thinking about you. Stay strong, girl. »

The Librarians and The Broken Seal - Chapter 3

3.

After a hearty meal that was both breakfast and lunch, they decided to spend the remainder of the day on the porch swing. Jacob had a fine library, Sasha had found a book she hadn't read yet and he a volume he wanted to compulse. She sat with her legs bent beside her, his head resting on her thigh as he was lying down.

He thought it was so easy to be with her. She had great conversation, as he discovered the night before. They had started with the oil rig he always said he was working on, went to the economy of said oil, switched to its discovery and uses, moved forward to black powder in ancient China, and digressed on ancient civilisations. He almost told her about the rise and fall of Apep but he had remembered in time that she wasn't supposed to know about that. Or the Library.

A sound coming from inside the house made them both jerk. Jacob had a hard time recognizing the ring of his phone. Eve’s ringtone. He jumped from the swing.

« Sorry, I have to take that. »

She made a muted sound he took for an agreement and kept reading. He had to haste not to miss the call.

« What's up? Is there an emergency? »

« The Clippings Book is acting up. It didn't show newspaper articles, but some kind of pictograms, dragons, and what appears to be a monster of some sort. »

« It's my weekend off, Eve. Can't this wait ? »

« Are you still hungover? It's almost eighteen hundred! »

« No... I met someone. »

« Oh... Oooh! Okay, we'll keep researching on our side, you come as soon as you can.  »

« All right. Bye. »

Jacob hung up with a sigh. There was no way around it : their moment out of time was coming to an end.

When he came out, Sasha was leaning on the railing, looking at the scenery. She had a look of seriousness on her face that told him something was coming, and not from him. He rested his shoulder against the post next to her and waited for her to talk.

« Something... unexpected happened last night. »

« You mean the sex? »

« No, I thought it might happen... I liked you... I was not supposed to like you. »

« What do you mean? »

« I knew who you were when I walked into that bar, Jacob Stone. I knew you are a Librarian. »

Jacob couldn't believe what she was saying. He was feeling the anger rising.

« So it was all a setup? »

« I needed a way to meet you, and it was the easiest one. »

« And why did you need to meet me ? »

« Dire times are coming, and you need my help. We should get back to the Library. What is the fastest way ? Shall we take your car ? »

« There's a faster way. Come with me. »

Sasha looked at Jacob with interrogation when he entered the house. Jacob took his phone and dialed a number.

« Eve? I'm coming back. Can you ask Jenkins to prepare a door? I'm at the ranch. Thanks. »

He went to the main door and closed it, did the same with the back door, turned out all the lights. He took Sasha’s hand and led her to the guest room. The door glowed blue when he opened it and they went through.

They were transported instantly to the Annex. Inside, Cassandra, Ezechiel and Eve had gotten books out of the shelves, put papers and drawings everywhere and were in full research mode. Sasha had a low whistle of admiration.

« That's ingenious! »

Jenkins was at the door when they arrived. He looked happy at Sasha's sight.

« Lady Alexandria! I'm so happy to see you again! »

« Galahad! Oh! What a lovely surprise! »

Sasha extended her hands, Jenkins took them in his and kissed them as he bowed deeply. The Librarians looked at each other in surprise. Their questions fused all at once.

« You know each other? »

« How did you meet? »

« Alexandria ? »

Jenkins kept her hand in his while he presented her to the group.

« Lady Alexandria and I met in King Arthur’s court in Camelot some centuries ago. »

« I go by Sasha now. »

« Old habits die hard, Mylady. »

Jenkins bowed again and she laughed softly. Eve came forward.

« Who is she and what is she doing here ? »

Sasha didn't answer right away. She went to the Clippings Book and looked at the open pages. She slid her finger on the dragon.

Cassandra was the closest to the table.

« We know dragons are involved. But we've been unable to reach Mr. Drake. And the one who's hidden under Rome is asleep again. »

« Qiángdà is a son of a bitch, and Quirinus an old recluse wishing it was still ancient Rome. Dragons are rarely involved, but when they are, it's important for humankind. »

Ezekiel sneered. « Yeah, like when Mr. Drake tried to help the Serpent Brotherhood take over the Library ! »

Sasha looked at him. « I said dragons, not snakes. »

Eve repeated. « Who are you ? »

Sasha looked at Jenkins with an air of regret.

« I'm sorry I never told you before. You should have known back then. »

She turned to Jacob.

« And I was afraid of your reaction when you learned the truth about me. »

Jenkins' face showed worry. Like Eve, he asked.

« Who are you ? »

Sasha stayed silent, still looking at Jacob, gathering her thoughts. When she talked, they had no choice but to listen, with their heart as well as their ears.

« They say dragons are as old as time itself. It's not exactly true, but their measure of time is millennia. When men hadn't started to express their thoughts in writing, demons roamed the earth. Seven of them, the most powerful, were called from the underworld, summoned by means of a seal, a blood sacrifice and ritual words. One seal for each demon. They brought chaos and destruction, blood and tears, fear and death.

« The dragons hadn't yet learned how to take human form, but some had a liking for humankind. And when the demons brought the world on the verge of extinction, they decided to drive them back to where they belonged. It was a bloody war. But finally the seven seals were broken and the demons banished back to the underworld.

« The dragons had broken the seals in seven parts each, and each of the pieces was given to one of them for safekeeping in its lair. And they remained safe for the next six millenia. »

Jacob looked at Sasha with puzzlement. She was talking about dragons and demons with a knowledge only a Librarian would possess. But clearly she wasn't one.

She paused again, while they were taking in what she was saying. They knew dragons were real, they had met two of them already. But they had never heard of their history before. It suddenly clicked in their minds : the Clippings Book had shown pictograms, dragons and monsters. Not a coincidence. There never was.

« Who are you? How do you know all that? »

She looked at Jacob directly and her eyes shone of molten gold.

« I am dragon. »

The smell of rainforest woke her up, Oliver was standing near her bed. She had refused to see him since her doctor's appointment, but she was glad he was here now. He sat down on the edge of the bed.

« How was the meeting ? »

Nola laughed and sat up.

« I should have figured you'd know. It was emotional. I felt so weak and helpless compared to them. »

« Will you do the procedure ? »

She closed her eyes. The green scent made her want to curl up and weep, but she had cried all her tears earlier that night.

« I... Yes. It's the only way I'm gonna have a normal life again. Or as close to normal as possible. But I'm so scared, Ollie ! »

She heard him move, and he was holding her, hugging her. She clung to him, anchoring herself in his scent. She felt the tingle of desire grow inside her, and she was about to let go of him when he whispered in her ear.

« Does your bed still smell of rainforest ? »

His scent became suddenly musky. In the dark she found his lips and kissed him hard.

« Not enough. »

*****

They rolled on the bed, hands gripping clothes. They didn’t need light, since they already knew each other’s bodies. There was fever in their movements, it seemed no stroke was quick enough or hard enough. They were still half-dressed when Oliver plunged into her. They both moaned.

And then they found tenderness. Each caress was sweet, each move caring, each kiss gentle. Oliver moved slowly, savoring the feel of her body beneath his, lithe and soft. He trailed his lips in her neck to her shoulder, and she shuddered, remembering the bite and the pleasure it had brought her.

Nola was floating. Or at least it's how Oliver's tender lovemaking made her feel. But she wanted more. More passionate, more tangible. She crossed her legs around his body and turned him on his back. She was above him and she could lead. She fisted her hands in his hair and kissed him hard. She kept moving her hips while her lips traveled around his torso. She had felt his scars with her fingers, she was now exploring them with her mouth, kissing, licking, scraping them with her teeth. She bit his nipple and he jerked. She was on fire and she wanted him to feel the same.

The assault on his body was making Oliver twitch and shiver. He liked that she was in charge, but he didn't want to peak first. So he sat down, and wrapped his arms around her, going deeper inside her. She threw her head out with a sob and moved quicker. She came violently, and the spasms of her inner muscles made him come in turn.

*****

He lied back down, still holding her, and gently stroked her back.

« I'm sorry. »

« About what ? »

« I was there too late, and you got shot. »

Nola lifted her head, moved to turn the light on and faced Oliver.

« Did you shoot me ? Was it you who pulled the trigger ? »

« No. »

« Then you are not responsible for my wound. »

He stayed silent.

« Ollie, you have to believe that. You’re not responsible for everything that happens in Starling City. »

Oliver left the bed and picked up his discarded clothes without speaking.

« But why would you think that ? I know you've taken on the role of vigilante, saving people and all that, but why ? »

« My father… He died so I could survive. And right his wrongs. »

« Right his wrongs ? So you carry on your shoulders the weight of your father’s sins. What horrible thing did he do that you feel the need to repair his deeds ? »

Oliver finished dressing up without answering.

« You tell me when you’re going to the hospital. »

He went to the open window and left without another word.

*****

Oliver was back on the raft in the Sea of China. They had survived for days already, barely eating, exposed to the elements. He saw his father take out a gun, shoot the captain and then tell him to survive at all costs and shoot himself in the head. Survive to make things right.

*****

Nola remained where she was. She had never before wondered why Oliver was doing all this Vigilante stunt. She had just thought he wanted to do the right thing, cut down the corruption, weed out the criminals. But it was more than that. He was on a mission.

The next few days passed like in a haze. Nola went to see her surgeon, but she barely listened when he detailed the procedure. She went to the office, trying to lose herself in work, but when she opened her notebook and fell on the page for her “Jungle” project, the scents lost their appeal. She couldn’t concentrate. She went to the meeting one last time, and everybody wished her good luck. Her best friend Roxanne called from Europe, and that was comforting. But she didn’t scent Oliver’s rainforest. On the eve of her operation, Nola sent him a text, hoping he would at least come close enough so she could smell him before going under.

WildFire - Chapter 6

6.

It was Monday afternoon and Nola couldn’t concentrate anymore. She had spent the last few days thinking about what Dr K. had told her. Walking without pain, running even, but with a foot that wouldn’t be her own. She left her lab not knowing where to go. Oliver had been a good friend, calling her several times, but she had refused his visits. Her foot was in constant pain, sometimes dull, sometimes as sharp as it was when she got shot. Driving was the only thing that caused no discomfort. So she drove around that evening, unsure of everything.

And she found herself parking in front of the church five minutes before the start of the session. She watched several people walk in, some on two legs, some with crutches, some in wheelchairs. She took a deep breath and followed them inside.

The Hood stood on the roof of a nearby building. He watched Nola enter the sanctuary and thought if she wouldn’t talk to him, at least she had someone else to talk to. He turned and jumped in the back alley. There was a thief on the loose, a gifted one as it seemed, and he wanted to put him away.

*****

Nine people were in a room in the basement of the church. Mostly men, looking like seasoned warriors. One of them walked up to Nola.

« I’m Pierre, Doc K. told me you might show up. I’m glad you’re here. »

« Thank you. »

« The first time is always the hardest. It takes courage to make that step. Literally and figuratively. »

Nola smiled. Pierre was like a kind giant, smelling of leather and grapefruit, and when she looked down, she saw his amputated legs. They all sat in a circle, Pierre obviously in charge.

« Hello everyone. »

There was an echo of hellos and Nola thought of all the movies she’s seen where such a scene had occurred.

« How is everyone doing today ? Josh ? »

Josh spoke in a low voice of phantom pain and his ex-wife. He smelled of green apples and despair. One by one, each participant talked about themselves, their feelings and experiences. Nola saw they were all missing a limb, either an arm, or a leg, sometime more than one. They all had prosthetics. They all smelled a little like misery.

After everyone had spoken, Pierre turned to Nola.

« We have a newcomer tonight. Everyone, this is Nola. »

She didn’t like being the center of attention like that, but after watching so much bravery, she couldn’t just run.

« Hello. »

« Do you want to tell us about yourself ? How did you get hurt ? »

« A few months back, I was kidnapped by someone who didn’t want me to testify at his trial. »

She  saw signs of recognition and guessed she must have been on TV at the time.

« I was shot and my forefoot has been just about obliterated. »

She watched them return to the time they had been wounded, recognized the signs of pain and trauma.

« I haven’t been amputated, but my surgeon mentioned it for the first time last week. »

« And how do you feel about it ? »

Nola  hesitated, and then admitted, more to herself than the others.

« I’m scared. It’s a decision I have to make, it’s not like waking up with a missing limb. »

And now she couldn’t stop talking.

« My foot is deformed, but it’s my foot. I know it, I feel it, I can sense cold and heat, caress and pain. And cutting it off... »

Tears formed in her eyes and started falling on her cheeks.

« How is it mine, if it's not there ? How can I feel myself without my foot ? »

The men on her sides grabbed her hands and held on tight while she started sobbing helplessly. It took her a minute, but she swallowed her tears and breathed normally again. A lot of the participants had cried too.

« I'm sorry. »

« Don't be. We've all been through this. Recognizing one's self once a limb has been removed is very hard. It takes time. Some never can, and they usually self-distruct or commit suicide. »

Nola put her cast forward and looked at it. A blond woman who smelled like vanilla looked at her missing arm.

« At least you have a chance to say goodbye. »

Again, there were sounds of approval.

« You still have a choice ? »

« Yes. On one hand, I can keep my foot, but I'll be in constant pain, I have to keep the crutches and I can hardly walk. On the other hand, if I chose amputation, I'll be able to walk and maybe run without pain, without canes or cast and have pretty much a normal life. »

« When do you have to decide ? »

« Whenever I want, but the sooner the better. »

When she came back to her apartment, Nola felt empty, like wrung. She made herself an instant Chinese soup, shared it with Shadoe. The men and women she had met tonight had shown so much resiliency and strength, she wasn't quite sure she could measure up. But if they had survived this, maybe she could too. After all, losing part of a foot was so little when she compared it to Pierre's loss of both his legs. He was walking almost normally, and with long pants, she would have never guessed he was an amputee.
