WildFire - Chapter 3

3.

Laurel was getting suspicious. Her client was the third this week to withdraw his complaint against Robert Daggett.

« Why would you do that, Kevin ? We have a strong case, and we have several other cases against him ! »

The man looked terrified.

« Just leave it be ! My reasons are my own. »

Laurel came closer to her client and whispered.

« What happened ? »

Kevin became very pale.

« My wife and my boy are missing. They say they'll be returned to me only if I drop my complaint and the case is dismissed. »

He left without another word, leaving Laurel speculating. From the bottom of her bag, she retrieved a little black phone and headed for the women's bathroom. The voice on the other end sounded deep.

« Yes ? »
« There is a class action lawsuit against Robert Daggett but three of the plaintiffs are dropping their complaints. The last one, Kevin Dillon, told me his wife and son have been kidnapped. Maybe the others have been threatened too. »

There was a silence.

« Give me their names. »

Laurel complied and heard someone coming in. Her voice dropped.

« You have to help. Please. »

She hoped that once again the Vigilante would come to the rescue.

*****

Oliver closed his phone and came to see Felicity who was in front of the computers. He rapidly got the addresses he needed and decided to drop by to see if he could find a clue. He took Diggle as spotter. But as he expected the apartments were empty. On the last place he visited, he opened the window to check the fire escape. And right there, a small piece of fabric was caught between a step and a railing. He went to the kitchen, found a plastic bag and retrieved it delicately without touching it. He brought it back to the car and took his phone. Diggle looked at him from the driver's seat.

« What's that ? »
« A clue. And I know just the right person to help us with that. »

*****

A week after Oliver's visit, his scent had dissipated from her apartment. Nola was happy her life was back on tracks, but she couldn't help missing the rainforest in her living room.

She was still embarrassed by the way she had flirted with Oliver. « Make my bed smell like the rainforest. » Really ? She was probably the only woman in Starling City that was turned on by smells and not touch. He hadn't called or texted, so she assumed he didn't need her in his life.

Valerio had come into her office the day before, with the first sales numbers for White Sun and he was so happy he had given her a huge bonus. This man was going to make her rich. Or at least give her enough money to retire early.

She had started to work on recreating Oliver's scent in her lab, a pet project nobody knew about code named « Jungle ». If anyone was to stumble upon it, they would assume she was creating a new fragrance. Not trying to mimic the scent of the man she had the hots for. She had started with the base note : raw iron. Simple enough. The heart notes were harder to select. She wanted plant, and green, but she had hundreds of samples to test before selecting just a few. The head notes would be the harder to get. Especially since she was working from memory. And suddenly the rainforest was everywhere.

She whipped around and he was standing ten feet from her. She blushed, feeling like a schoolgirl caught daydreaming about her crush. Normal people usually take a deep breath to calm their nerves. But in Nola's case, it had the opposite effect. If she breathed too deeply, she would get more nervous and aroused. She took the time to put the cap back on her sample, and close her notebook, and it was enough to get back her composure.

« Good evening Oliver. »
« Hi Nola. This is Diggle. Dig, this is Nola. »

Dig looked like a man who could take on an army by himself, and he smelled of steel and... pears. Weird combination...

« What can I do for you ? »
« Do you want to have dinner with me ? I need your help with... a scent. »

He was looking at her with intensity and she guessed it was not Oliver who needed her help, but his alter ego the Vigilante.

« Yes, of course. »

Back in the car, Nola was wondering if Diggle knew about his secret when Oliver got to the heart of the subject.

« If I give you an item, can you follow the trail ? »
« You mean like a sniffer dog ? »

Oliver looked uncomfortable.

« I did not see it like that. »
« You remember McKenna Hall ? She was in class with us. »
« Yes, McKenna. »
« We were in contact when I was in college. And I wanted to know what was the extent of my... gift. So I gave her a call and I competed against the best dogs of Starling PD. »
« Really ? And what were the results ? »
« I'm close to their level, slower, but better in trace detection, though we didn't try drugs. And since I'm human, I can analyse what I smell, not just follow my nose. »

Oliver and Diggle exchanged a look through the rearview mirror.

« Can you work first and have dinner later ? »
« Yes. But there's a problem. I can't walk for very long. My foot is still hurting. »
« Could you follow the scent from the car ? »
« Depends on where it's going. »
« Listen, you do what you can and I'll take it from there, okay ? »
« Okay. »

They soon arrived in front of the building where Oliver had found the piece of fabric. He thought a second about going directly to the fire escape in the alley, but a glance at Nola's foot in a cast made him head for the front door.

Nola sighed heavily when she didn't spot any elevator in the hall, and hopped on the first steps with her canes. Oliver picked her up and climbed the four flights carrying her. Nola laughed.

« I don't know if I should feel offended or get used to it ! »

They exchanged a deep look and once again she felt the spark of desire. Diggle, who was following with her canes, shook his head in disbelief.

Inside the apartment, Oliver explained the situation to Nola and gave her the plastic bag.

« Next time, double bag the evidence. »

She closed her eyes and took a whiff.

« Gentlemen, can I ask you to wait outside ? I need a minute on my own. »

Oliver turned to leave but Dig wouldn't move. He was curious about what Oliver had said about Nola's abilities.

« She knows what she's doing. Come on. »
« Please, Mister Summer-pear. »

Diggle didn't understand.

« You smell of pear in the summer, sweet and ripe, with a core of bulletproof steel. Now, out. »

Still laughing, Oliver pulled him by the arm and closed the door behind them. Dig looked offended. He was muttering under his breath about he didn't, couldn't smell of pears.

Once she was alone, Nola looked around. She was uneasy about snooping around when the owners weren't there. But she wanted to help. So she went through the drawers, familiarizing herself with the odors of this family. Citrus, orange and tiare flowers. She went back into the living room and opened the bag again. The smell of the fabric was like dust, soft grey. She limped to the window and followed the scent outside. Damn, she was going to have to step out on the fire escape. She yelled to the men to come in.

« Can you help me out ? I have to know if the scent is going up or down. »
« People usually go down. »
« The neighbouring building is very close, so they may have come up on the roof, on to the next building and down the stairs on the other street. »

Oliver and Diggle looked at each other.

« Told you she's smart. »

Once outside, she hopped to the stairs going down, then going up, closing her eyes each time to inhale deeply. She climbed up two stairs.

« Yep, they went that way. I can follow their scent, it's fresh enough. »
« Nola, get back down here, we'll get on the ground and get around the block. »
« No, I have to follow the trail. »

She clenched her teeth, dropped her canes and held the railings to hop the stairs.

« Nola... »
« Oliver, I know what it's like to be scared, and hurt. I have to help them. »

Oliver climbed up behind her, put his arm around her waist and helped her up. Three flights of stairs and they were on the roof. Nola was out of breath, on the verge of tears. She sat on the ledge, not even aware of the sun setting on the horizon.

« How bad is it ? »
« Very bad. Some bones have been shattered, ligaments and tendons severed. I'm hardly walking. I've had four surgeries so far and it's still not very good. »
« Want me to carry you ? »
« No, I'll walk with my canes. This way. »

Nola led them across the roof to the next building.

« No way I'm making that jump. I guess I have to go down and back up again. »

Oliver and Diggle exchanged a look. She was obviously tired and in pain.

« I'll take it from here. »
« And I'll take you back to the ground. »
« Thanks. We can meet up in front of this building, so I can continue to follow the trail. »
« Only if you're up for it. »
« Give me a wheelchair and I can follow a scent to hell and back. »
« Hoo-rah ! »

They separated, Oliver jumping over the alley to the next building, Diggle helping Nola with the stairs.

« So, pear ? »

Nola had to laugh at the hurt tone in Diggle's voice.

« Yes, but with a base note of steel and a head note of amber. Sweet, but masculine enough, don't worry. »

They met in front of the main door. But Nola was worried.

« Their scent is not here. Not the mom, the kid or the bad guys. Either they went through the alley door, or... »
« … They're still inside. »
« Yes. Dig, get Nola back to the car. »
« No ! I can tell you where they are. After that you can take me to dinner. »

Thankful for the elevator, Nola smelled each floor thoroughly until she got to a door on the fifth floor.

« They're here. »
« All right. Diggle, you stay here in watch while I go back to the car with Nola and grab my gear. »

They separated. Once she was safely in the car, Oliver ran back to where the kidnappers held their hostages.

« I'll be coming from outside, you take the main door. »

The well coordinated attack lasted only a few seconds. Two men were down with arrows protruding from their bodies, a third whimpering in pain with a bullet in his shoulder. The fourth had crossed his hands over his head in surrender. Oliver and Diggle severed the ties of all the victims and left without another word. They were back in the car less than fifteen minutes after they left Nola.

« You did an amazing job, Nola. Without you, I doubt we'd have found them. »
« You'd have found another way. Now, dinner ? »
« Give me five minutes to clean up and I'm all yours. »
« Deal. Will you join us, Diggle ? »
« No, I have plans of my own. Think you can drive yourself, Sir ? »
« I'll manage. »

They exchanged a friendly smile.

Wild Fire - Chapter 2

2.

Four months later

Valerio Rossi was very proud of the new fragrance his fashion house was launching today. White Sun would be a big hit after tonight's party, thanks to the promising young Nose he had been able to hire the year before. This Doctor Hendrickx was going to be his money maker for the next thirty or fourty years. He had to pay her an exorbitant salary, but it looked like his investment was worth it. She was currently sitting in a high chair at the bar, her foot still in a cast after a regretable incident a few months back, but she loooked pretty enough to be shown around. In fact he had insisted she come tonight, counting on people's curiosity towards her kidapping and subsequent rescue by the Vigilante, to come at his party. He toured the Verdant's floor, shaking hands and kissing cheeks while pretty hostesses dressed in sparkling white sprayed whoever wanted with the perfume.

Nola was tired, her foot ached and she knew she had been used as a publicity stunt. She couldn't said no to Valerio when he had asked her to come, because of the fortune he was paying her. He had sat her on a chair, provided a drink, that she left aside, and told her to smile, which she did, profusely.

She had been surprised when Tommy Merlyn and Laurel Lance had come to say hi. They had been in the same class in high school, but she had no idea they remembered her. They had spent a nice time reminiscing before Tommy had to check on something. Some other people had come say hi, and how much they liked her perfume, even if it was a lie. White Sun was pretty much all she was scenting at the moment, the air was saturated with it.

« Five more minutes and I'm gone. »

She saw Valerio gest towards her and bring three people with him. She immediatly recognized Oliver from the pictures and videos on the news. He had changed so much since high school she wasn't sure she'd have recognized him if she had seen him in the street. She guessed the older blonde was his mom and the young brunette his sister. She smiled.

« Moira, this is our R&D Director, Doctor Nola Hendrickx. Nola, this is Moira Queen, her daughter Thea, and son Oliver. »

Nola let herself be brushed on the cheeks by both women.

« Oh, we love your perfume, it's very fresh and warm at the same time. »
« Thank you. It wouldn't suit you, though, Mrs Queen. You should wear Moonbeam instead. But it would be perfect for you, Thea. »
« Then let me go get you a bottle ! »
« Thank you ! »

Oliver got closer to Nola and put a kiss on her cheek.

« It's nice to see you again, Nola. »

She smiled and smelled deelpy. This scent... She looked at him in stupefaction and whispered.

« You ! »

Oliver shook slightly his head, his smile still in place. Nola hesitated for a second and smiled again.

« It's nice to see you too, after all these years. »

Moira turned back to Nola.

« And how is your foot ? »
« Getting better every day. Physical therapy is long and tedious but it's doing its job. Thank you for asking. »

Valerio returned with a little package.

« Here's for you Thea. Moira, I'll have a bottle of Moonbeam sent over your house by tomorrow. Nola is never wrong about scents. »
« Then I'll try it. Thank you, Nola. »
« My pleasure. »

The Queens smiled goodbye and followed Valerio who wanted to parade them around. Oliver looked at Nola one last time and left.

*****

Nola was back at her place not long after. No need to make something up, she was tired and her foot was aching. And she had so much more on her mind than the damn party.

Oliver...

Oliver was the Vigilante. From his reaction, she guessed nobody in his family knew, and he didn't want them to find out. She remembered the kidnapping, the awful pain, and how safe she had felt when Oliver had carried her into his arms. In high school, he had been mostly a jerk, until she had threatened to tell his girlfriend he was cheating on her. Then he had just ignored her.

Once in her pajamas, Nola put the kettle on and made herself a cup of tea. She smiled to herself and made a second one. She cuddled on her sofa with her cats, holding her mug, and waited.

She didn't wait very long. When she heard the knock on her door, she didn't have to look in the peephole to know Oliver was there.

« I was wondering who I would see tonight, you or... the other one. »
« You're not a bad guy I need to scare. »
« True. »

Nola went back on the sofa, and offered Oliver the second mug of tea. He took a whiff.

« Smells nice. »

Nola just smiled. Oliver looked at her intensely.

« Thank you for not saying anything. »
« It's not my secret to tell. »
« How did you know ? »
« Your scent. »
« My perfume ? »
« No, your cologne is subtile and well chosen. I'm speaking about your body ordor. Every scent is unique. In high school, you smelled of gold. »

Oliver had a little smile.

« Gold ? »
« Yes, rich and tasteless. »
« Oh... »
« But if I hadn't seen you tonight, I wouldn't have recognised you. The five years alone on a deserted island have erased the gold and replaced it with rainforest. And since no two persons have the same scent... »

Oliver looked into his mug, took a sip.

« I smell of rainforest ? »
« Yes. Green, wild and dangerous. »

She closed her eyes and moved her head as she smelled the air.

« There's a hint of steel... no, iron. Raw and ruthless. »

One of the cats jumped on Oliver's lap. He was surprised but petted the calico that purred like a freight train.

« Hello you ! »
« That's Mrs. Crumbs. And this one on my knees is Shadoe. »

She petted a beautiful grey cat with golden eyes. Mrs. Crumbs settled down and made herself at home on his thighs.

« What do cats smell like ? »
« They actualy smell like cats. Every on of them has its own scent, but I don't see them in colors. And when I come back from work, it's soothing. It calms my over sensitive sense of smell. My mom bought me one when I turned four and it was a life changer. »
« I'm sorry I was such a jerk in high school. »
« No more than everybody else. »
« I remember... How did you know I was seing Michelle and Brenda ? »

Nola smiled and tapped her nose. Oliver shook his head.

« So you always had this gift ? »
« Yes. »
« In senior year, we went to the beach. And you looked so different that day. From a bookworm to butterfly. Did it have anything to do with it ? »
« Yes. The sea has such a strong smell it overpowers every other smell. For the first time ever I could smell only one scent. It's complex and composed of a hundred different scents, but it's a whole. I didn't smell any of you, your perfumes and deodorants, the tobacco... and else... It freed me. I felt strong. I felt like myself. »
« Do you ever go back there ? »
« The first thing I did when I started working for Valerio is buy a house on the beach. It's small but it's perfect. »

Oliver looked pensive.

« You said I smelled like the rainforest. What do you smell like ? »

Nola's smile vanished slowly as she looked in Oliver's eyes. He saw her breath hitch and she licked her lips. She swallowed and whispered.

« I smell of wild flowers. A meadow. »

He was intrigued by the change in her behavior, all smile and friendly one second, and like a doe caught in the light the other.

« What's going on, Nola ? »

She looked in her tea and he saw her blush.

« Nola ? »
« Your scent... it changed slightly. »
« What do you mean ? »

She lifted her gaze and looked in his eyes again.

« I smelled... your desire. And it woke up mine. »

Oliver was taken aback. When he had thought about that day at the beach, he had remembered her as she had been back then, in her bathing suit, copper hair and fair skin. He had recalled wanting her. Looking at her now with this image of her in his mind had stirred up his present self. And she has smelled that. Oliver felt embarrassed. Nola put her cup of tea down and got up with her cane. He did the same and Mrs. Crumbs let an angry meow when she landed on the floor.

« Oliver, you have two choices now. You can leave, or... »

She took a deep breath.

« … You can stay and make my bed smell like rainforest. »

Oliver got a flash of their naked bodies joined and wondered if she would taste like wild flowers too. She shivered under his gaze, probably smelling his growing desire. He took his jacket and headed for the door.

« I'd better go. »
« I suppose it's the right thing to do. »
« Bye Nola. »
« Bye Ollie. »

Once in the corridor, he turned back to her before she closed her door.

« Can I assume you like the smell of the rainforest ? »

She had a huge grin.

« I'd love to go there one day. »

He smiled back and left.

Nola sighed heavily and went back to her living room. Both cats looked at her as if asking where her visitor went. She limped to the chair Oliver had occupied, caught a blanket on her way and snuggled in with her cats, falling asleep basking in his scent.

In the elevator, Oliver thought he didn't expect this conversation. Scents and smells... He never had a woman come on to him like that. « Make my bed smell like the rainforest. » He closed his eyes and thought of the island.

*****

The day had been tough. Slade had made him run, and fight. Oliver was bone tired, hungry, and itchy. After a few months on the island, he was still afraid of noises and shadows. But that night was different. He settled on hit cot but couldn't will himself to sleep. Slade had taken the first watch so he was supposed to rest until it was his turn. But he got up and asked him to change shifts. Slade went to his own bed and was asleep in seconds. Oliver couldn't belive how quiet this man was when he was asleep. The night settled around them and for the first time since he arrived, he was at peace in this jungle. The sounds didn't make him jump, the smells were now familiar. He closed his eyes and listened to the restlessness of the wild. Tomorrow would be hard, but for now, everything was calm.

Wild Fire - Chapter 1

This is an Arrow fanfiction set during season 1.

1.

She was going to testify.

She had seen her landlord Simon Edwards knock on her neighbour Vanessa's door, enter, she had heard the screams, the sounds of hitting, and she had called the police. The scumbag was going to jail, and she was going to be the one who put him there.

Nola looked at herself in the mirror, straightened her jacket, smoothed her hair she had wrangled in a tight bun and took a deep breath. She was not used to speaking in public, being much more at ease in her lab, but it was time to be brave and face her fears.

The knock on her door made her jump. She frowned and looked in the peephole. A delivery man was standing in the corridor holding a parcel. She opened. The man pointed a gun at her.

« You're coming with me quietly. »

Nola stood motionless, in shock, unable to detach her gaze from the barrel. The man grabbed her arm and pulled her down the corridor, the stairs, through the side door to the alley and pushed her in a van that was waiting, motor running. The man sat in the passenger seat and pointed the gun at her once more. She curled on the floor and realized the acrid fear smell was coming from her.

After a little drive, the van stopped, the side door opened and the same man dragged her out. She fell hard on her knees but that didn't stop him. She cried out in pain and the man had a nasty smile. He trew her in a chair and put handcuffs on her wrists and ankles.

Once the men were gone and she found herself alone, Nola looked around her. She supposed she was in a warehouse of some kind, very big, but very dark. Her fear started to reced and her mind started to clear. She couldn't see much, the windows were so small and dirty hardly any light was coming inside, but she had one sense that was like no other. So she closed her eyes and took a deep breath through her nose.

The colors emerged in her mind. She smelled the dust and mold and saw grey. The scent of the river nearby was a brownish green. The warehouse itself was wood and steel and she saw their brown and dark grey. She took another breath and smelled her kidnapper on her. She had seen his face, and she thought that was a bad sign. His scent was dark brown, like aged wood, but with a rotten core. It was the first time she had encountered such a smell, but she figured out people willing to do anything for money would not smell like peaches and roses. Now even blind she could recognize him.

She also figured out why she was here instead of the courtroom. Mr Edwards didn't want to go to jail and figured out taking her out of the equation was the best way to achieve his goal. She was still alive, which was a good sign, so he was going to keep her from testifying. But now that her fear was gone, she thought she would still testify once free. And he had to know that. She had no family he could put pressure on, so he would either kill her or scare her into shutting up. She smelled her fear again.

*****

« In other news, Doctor Nola Hendrickx, who was going to testify in court today against building owner Simon Edwards on his alleged assault on Vanessa Redgrave, is missing. Police is pursuing several leads but has no comment at this time. »

Oliver Queen stopped in mid pushup to look at the screen. The photo of a pretty redhead showed up in place of the anchor. He jumped up and went to Felicity who was in front of the computers.

« Already on it. Doctor Nola Hendrickx, PHD in chemistry and botany, head Nose for Valerio Rossi, perfumes division. »
« We were in high school together. »
« Like the reporter said, she's the main witness in an assault and attempted rape case. When she didn't show up this morning, the DA got a 24 hours continuance. So if you find her before tomorrow morning, she can still testify and help put the bag guy behing bars. »
« Look at his financials. If he owns one building, he may own others. »
« Way ahead of you... He owns several companies... One of them owns different warehouses in the Port District. »
« Looks like the perfect place to stash someone for a few days. »
« I'll call Dig. »
« No need, I'll be fine on my own. »

Oliver put on a t-shirt and his green jacket, seized his bow and quiver and left.

*****

The man came back and Nola was afraid once more. He turned the lights on and she saw a few more feet around her.

« Mister Edwards sends his regards. »
« Tell him he can go to Hell. »

Nola tried to show a brave face, but she was intensely aware of the smell of fear emanating from her. The man crouched in front of her and took his gun out.

« I'm really sorry you say that. You see, I have a problem with killing. Don't like it much. Try to avoid it usually. So, will you be a good girl and stay away from all this mess ? »
« No. »

Nola shivered. The man pointed his gun to her foot and shot.

Nola shrieked. The pain was worse than anything she had ever felt in her entire life. Even when she had broken her arm when she was six. It resounded in her leg and up her torso. Her foot throbbed and she wondered if she had anything left below her ankle. She got vaguely aware the man was talking again.

« On the other hand, I have no problem with wounds and pain. Wounds heal and you forget about pain. So, will you be a good girl or do I have to shoot your knee as well ? »

Nola had a sudden memory of her aunt Kelly, the midwife, telling one of her patient to push through the pain and concentrate on something else, like sounds or smells. She closed her eyes and focused on the smells. The black of burnt powder from the gun, the dark red coppery of her wound, the rotten brown from her torturer. She opened her lids and looked directly in his eyes. The man put his gun on her knee. But before anything else could happen, the gun jumped out of the man's hand, and she saw the shadow of something before all the lights went out. A deep voice echoed in the building.

« Dirk Lancaster, you have failed this city. »

Gunshots exploded in Nola's ears, so she overbalanced her chair and fell on the side. Her foot erupted with pain and she bit her lip to muffle the sound of her cry. By the time she was able to breathe normally again, there were no more sounds. The rotten brown smell had taken a sick green color, and Nola guessed that the late Mr. Lancaster wouldn't hurt anyone anymore.

A shadow approached her, smelling of rainforest, green, wild and dangerous. He opened the handcuffs.

« You're safe. »

When he took her in his arms, she turned her head and sniffed deeply the crisp and fresh scent, so unlike anyone she had ever met. He carried her out and she heard the sirens of an ambulance and saw its lights. He sat her down on the ground.

« You'll be fine now. »

He was gone before she could say « Thank you ».

*****

In the hospital, the doctors were not very optimistic about the state of her foot. Shattered bones, broken tendons. She would walk again, yes, but it would take a long time, a lot of surgery, and she would probably never run again. Which was fine with Nola since he hated to run. They bandaged her foot tightly and she entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.

She knew she would never be afraid again.
