WildFire - Chapter 11

11.

The next morning, Nola woke up in Oliver’s room. She turned her head and there he was. She was so used to his scent she hadn’t woken up when he had come to bed. She moved to put her head on his shoulder and they snuggled tenderly. But she just couldn’t fully appreciate that sweet moment. Something was looming in the back, coming from both Oliver and herself.

After a moment, Oliver put a kiss in Nola’s hair and went to the bathroom. She sighed, got up and put on the shirt that was lying there. She sat on the window seat and put her head on her bent up knees. The view was amazing but she didn't see it. Her heart was heavy and she felt like she was grieving. Oliver came out of the bathroom wearing his boxer shorts and sat next to her.

« What’s going on ? »

« I can’t stay here, Oliver. I have to get back to my place. »

« My family’s giving you a hard time ? I can talk to them. »

« No, they're great. Ollie… »

Nola sighed heavily.

« I've been here for six weeks, getting taken care of and pampered. »

« I like doing that. »

« I know. And I like that too. I like it too much. I realized recently I can only smell you. Your scent has taken mine over. »

Oliver was taken aback.

« I'm sorry. »

« It's not your doing. But I have to find the wildflowers again. When you take care of me like that, it makes me safe and secure. So much that I don't know if I can take care of myself anymore. I have to be able to walk on my own. Literally. »

Oliver looked away, looking pained. Nola closed her eyes and held back her tears.

« I'm so sorry Oliver. »

« Is it because of the Hood ? »

« It's never been about the Hood. I understand the mission you have taken upon yourself and the burden you carry every time you kill. It's about me. I have to find myself again, and I can't do that here. I'll move back to my apartment today. »

Oliver looked at Nola with what looked like regret.

« I understand. »

« But Ollie, that doesn't mean I'm not your friend anymore. I'm just a phone call away if you need me. Or if the Hood needs me. »

« Okay. I'll help you pack. »

« I'd rather if you didn't. »

Nola had a sad smile.

« I like the rainforest too much. »

*****

Oliver left the manor soon after talking with Nola. He liked having her around. She was fun and sweet, and she never questioned his duty. She had her own life so he didn't have to entertain her. He was going to miss her tremendously.

He went to the club and started working out. He pushed himself hard, trying to evacuate the sadness. When he answered only with grunts, John and Felicity left him alone. But by the end of the day, he realized it was a good thing Nola had left. His mind would be totally free to concentrate on the Undertaking and finding ways to stop this atrocity.

Nola was glad that Roxanne was still here when she came back to her apartment. Breaking up with Oliver had been much harder than she had expected and having a friend around was comforting. They shared ice cream and memories, laughs and tears, like friends do. When Roxanne finally left, Nola knew she wouldn't shed another tear over her former lover. Since he hadn't been at her place for a while, his scent had dissipated and only hers and Roxanne's remained. No more rainforest. And her "Jungle" project would stay just that, a project.

WildFire - Chapter 10 MA

10.

Oliver had indeed taken care of everything. Nola was installed in a lovely room next to Oliver's that was decorated in tones of peach. The house itself smelled of the people that lived here, both masters and servants, and it was mostly a good smell. Mostly. Nola couldn't put her finger on it, but something in the house scent made her shiver, something so tenuous she didn't even recognize it. And thankfully it wasn't in her room. She guessed the scents there were of the maids, since nobody occupied it.

The house was full of stairs, which was good for exercising, but risky, so she took her cane with her every time she left her room. She was a bit nervous to see Moira and Thea again, since she was their guest, but everything went well. Except the odd scent. She discovered it came from Moira. It was very subtle, but unmistakable. Nola wondered what this scent meant, if it was the smell of secrets.

During the following weeks, she made good use of the facilities the house offered. In the morning she went for a swim, after work, an hour in the gym for PT. She was staying in the peach room, but Oliver joined her there when he finished chasing bad guys. He also showed her very creative ways to use the hot tub. She went regularly to her apartment to get her mail, check on her plants and of course her cats.

She went to the Applied Sciences Division several times to have her prototype adjusted. She wished every amputee would have a prosthesis like hers one day. She also kept going to her meetings, finding support and friendship there.

Her very best friend Roxanne, journalist in London, was supposed to come over for a week and Nola decided to spend the evening with her rather than at the mansion. Oliver was preoccupied with something Hood related, and she didn't like to be alone with Thea and Moira when he wasn't here. So she went back to her place and just enjoyed being at home with her cats until her friend showed up. She had missed Roxanne's lovely lilac scent more than she could have imagined.

« Surprise ! »

« Oh my God, Nola ! You're here ! »

« I'm so happy to see you ! »

They hugged warmly, two best friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time.

« How are you ? And I want the truth. »

« I'm better than I thought I would be, but still not one hundred percent. »

« Okay. I believe you. »

« And you stopped smoking, Rox, I'm so proud of you. »

Roxanne laughed.

« Four months and counting ! I knew you'd find out right away. So, what are your plans for the week ? »

« First I won't be staying here with you. »

« Really ? You have to go back to the hospital ? »

« No. I told you about Oliver, the guy from high school I met again a few months back. »

« Billionaire playboy Oliver Queen ? What about him ? »

« Well… we've been seeing each other casually for some time, and he offered to let me stay at his place until I'm fully recovered. »

« WHAT ? You're dating a guy richer than Cresus ? And living in his mansion ? »

« It's not official. Actually we've never been on a real date. We had one take out dinner here after … an outing. »

« One dinner, and it was take-out ? »

« I was really tired, and my foot hurt, so yes, we had take-out. But we had a really nice time. »

« Uh-huh. But if you haven't dated, what have you been doing ? »

Nola drank a sip of tea with a smile without answering. Roxanne lifted her eyebrows.

« I see. So, how does he rate ? »

« Full marks. On every subject. »

Roxanne laughed.

« And what's his scent like ? »

« Rainforest. Green, deep, and a little dangerous. »

« I have to meet him. »

« You will. He's taking us out to his club tomorrow night. »

« His club ? Like he owns it ? »

« Yes. It's called Verdant. »

« Nola, I know it's been a long time since we went clubbing, but do you remember what happened the last time ? »

Nola looked embarrassed.

« Like you said, it was a long time ago, I'm older and wiser, and I have more control over myself. »

« Has your sense of smell dimmed ? »

« No, not really. »

Roxanne shook her head.

« Nola… »

« Rox, I promise you he won't meet WildFire. »

She looked doubtful and sighed.

« All right. Plus I'll be there with you just in case. Not that it helped a lot the last time. »

« The last time I just turned 21, I had my first tequila shot, and I was out of control. It will be different this time. »

« Okay. So, what are we going to wear ? »

Later that night, Nola decided not to go back to the mansion. Oliver wouldn't be there, and she didn't want to face his family on her own.

*****

Nola looked at herself in the mirror. So much time had passed since the last time she’d been out in a club she wanted to look her best. Especially with her artificial foot. Her new dress was both elegant and sexy, and her new boots were tight enough around the ankle to make her feel secure. She would walk without her cane tonight, but she would have both Oliver and Roxanne help her if need be. Roxanne joined her in front of the mirror.

« Looks like Dark Amber and WildFire are back ! »

« Don't say that ! »

« I promise you, Roxanne, this is not going to end up like last time. For one, I don't drink anymore. Plus you remember what professor Walsh said, you can't get drunk on smells. »

« Yeah right… You can play Science Says all you want, I know you, Nola. »

« Look at us. Going clubbing like we're college girls again. »

They looked at each other with a smile.

« That does bring back good memories. »

« Oh yeah ! »

Roxanne opened the door when Oliver knocked. She was almost as tall as him, with eyes the color of good whiskey, and her black leather number didn't hide much.

« Your billionaire playboy is here, Nola. »

« And you must be Roxanne. »

« Hey Ollie ! »

Oliver took one look at Nola and stood dumbstruck. She was wearing black knee-high boots, a little dress the color of molten copper that stopped mid-thigh and hung to her every curve, and her usually knotted hair was dancing in wild curls around her face. She had done something with her eyes and her lips… they were painted a bright red and shone under the light. She licked them sensually and he swallowed hard. She turned around to close and lock the door.

« You're not taking a bag ? »

« Everything I need is in this little pocket sewn into my dress. »

She tapped at her thigh with a red painted nail. Oliver had never seen Nola like that. He remembered her in high school uniform, in a bathing suit, and even naked, but tonight she looked like a flame, and flirted like a pro. She walked past them, hips swaying.

« What have I done ? »

Roxanne heard him mutter.

« You woke up the fire, Oliver. You're in for one hell of a night. »

He winced and followed them to the limo that was waiting in the street. Nola sat in the back with Roxanne, leaving the rear facing seat to Oliver. She kept flirting, but her friend was there to remind her where they were.

Just before entering the club, Roxanne took Nola aside.

« Two things. First, he scores a nine on my scale. »

« Only a nine ? Where did he fail ? »

« His hair. Too short for my taste. »

Nola laughed.

« What's the second thing ? »

« Keep the control. »

« Rox, I'm in control all the time. For the first time in ages, I can lower the bar a little. Please don't be a buzzkiller. »

« Honey, all the locks are open. Be careful. »

« I know I can count on you to keep me in check. Thanks for being here tonight. »

« I wouldn't be anywhere else. »

Oliver opened the door and they stepped in. The smells hit Nola like a wave. A thousand different scents made a rainbow of colors behind her closed eyes, perfumes, sweat, things she'd rather not identify. And pheromones. The hundreds of people there that wanted to get laid were giving off musky and spicy scents that were going up her head. Oliver saw her stumble and caught her by the waist.

« You're okay? »

« Oh yeah ! »

« Let's sit down. »

He led her through the crowd to the VIP section where they met Tommy. She had smelled the storm the last time, and she wondered if it had calmed down, so she brushed his cheek. Still there. And something else. She turned to Oliver when Tommy started talking to Roxanne.

« He broke up with Laurel. »

« Yeah, I know. It happened a few days ago. I'm guessing you can tell that from his scent ? »

« Yes. Hers isn't on him anymore. And the storm is still present. »

As time passed, the pheromones started to have an effect on Nola. Her biology teacher didn't believe anyone could get high on smells but she knew differently. The proximity with Oliver and his scent only reinforced it. She put her head in his neck.

« Ollie, let's dance. »

They went to the dance floor and started moving together, entwined. Nola closed her eyes and let her body sway with the music. She was secure in Oliver's arms and wasn't afraid of falling. He bent his head and put his cheek on hers. They felt like in a bubble, forgetting about the outside world. Oliver wished this moment would never end.

Nola was feeling hot and crisped her fingers on Oliver's nape. She closed her mouth on him and rubbed her body against his. She could feel his desire rise and wished they were alone. She raised her head to whisper in his ear.

« Is there a place where we could be alone ? »

« Nola… I'm not sure this is a good idea. »

« Oliver, let's forget there's a tomorrow. »

There was a plea in her voice, and Oliver desperately wanted to forget about the imminent danger, at least for a moment.

« The office. »

He put his arm around her waist and they climbed the stairs unnoticed.

*****

Oliver locked the door behind them and pounced on Nola. She met his desire with hers. He had indeed awakened the fire, and he intended to get burned. He pushed her against the wall and put his hands and lips on her. Everywhere he could reach. There was an urgency in his moves, but it had little to do with where they were, or how little time they had. He bared her breasts and devoured them. Nola laughed, her hands fisted in his short hair. He pulled up her dress and kneeled in front of her. Her scent was sharp and her taste fierce. She put her leg on his shoulder and closed her eyes with a deep moan.

Nola felt Oliver wanted to be in control, so she let him, savoring the way he played with her. She wanted release, but she enjoyed a lot his means of getting there. She came suddenly when he put two fingers inside her, letting out a cry of pleasure. He kept caressing her from inside and out, extending her climax. She wobbled on her feet when he finally let her go.

Oliver lifted her and sat her down on the desk. Just at the right height. She watched him unhook his jeans and seized him. He groaned and took her lips, kissing, licking, biting. And slipped into her damp heat. She cried out again, delighted by the invasion. Oliver wanted to slow down, to take his time, but he felt like he was burning from the inside and he kept his rapid pace.

Nola started to come again and Oliver followed with a sharp cry. They hung on to each other, swaying like drunks, out of breath.

*****

She finally opened her eyes and noticed the red marks on his shoulder where she had scratched him.

« Oliver, I'm sorry I hurt you. »

« I didn't even feel it. »

« WildFire can be a bit rough. »

« WildFire ? »

« That was my nickname in college. I was quite a party girl back then... »

The knock on the door had them tidy their clothes in a hurry.

« John ? What's going on ? »

« Felicity may have something. »

« I'll be right down. Nola, when you leave, go back to the manor. I'll meet you there as soon as I can. »

« All right. Stay safe. »

She watched him run down the stairs and disappear into the crowd. She followed slowly, watching her steps. She spotted Roxanne in deep conversation with a blond man, hesitated to interrupt them when her friend saw her. She excused herself and joined Nola.

« For God's sake, Nola. I thought you said you were in control. »

« I am. That's why I'm leaving now. I'll take a cab back to the manor, and you can take the limo when you get back to my place. »

« No, I'm leaving with you. »

« And ditch Mister Blond ? You should enjoy your evening. »

Roxanne looked at the man and back at Nola.

« I don’t do one night stands anymore. I’ll be gone in a few days, so… »

« All right. »

WildFire - Chapter 9

9.

After a week, Nola was healing well enough to start physical therapy. The lavender nurse helped her sit in a wheelchair and pushed her to a wide room. Several men and women were exercising already when she arrived, all of them missing a limb. She smelled sweat and tears. She spotted Pierre in the back, near a couple of walking rails. He welcomed her with a wide smile and a bear hug.

« Hello girl ! »

« Pierre, nice to see you ! What are you doing here ? »

« I’m your trainer. I got my diploma after my accident, so I can help people. »

Nola had ambivalent feelings. On one hand she was happy it was him, because she knew and trusted him. But on the other hand, she didn’t want to show him any more weakness. He had seen so much of that already.

« Time to get up and walk ! »

Nola had started to get used to being amputated, but walking ? She didn’t know if she was ready for that. She hadn’t set her left foot on the floor yet. Like looking at it, it frightened her, the new feeling.

« You have to get used to standing on your stub before getting your prosthesis so you can find your balance. Have you had any pain lately ? »

« Some, it’s rather dull so I’m off opioids. »

« Are you sure it’s a good idea ? PT can be hard, and wake up the pain. »

« Don’t worry about the pain, I can handle it. I’d rather handle the pain than use painkillers. »

« All right. Have you tried standing up on both your feet ? »

Nola winced. She was a bit ashamed.

« No, not yet. »

« No problem. »

He positioned her wheelchair at the end of the railings and asked her to stand up. She put all her weight on her right foot, pulled on the poles and stood up. Her leg felt weak after all this time in bed but she remained upright. Her left foot was bandaged as it would be in the prosthetic foot. Pierre looked at her.

« Now you put your stub on the ground. It is going to feel weird, but it's like going to the meeting. You have to make that first step. »

Slowly, Nola put her stump on the ground but she didn't put any weight on it. Pierre saw what she was doing.

« It's a good step. Now feel the ground under your foot. »

She thought that it did indeed feel weird. Her heel was right where it was supposed to be, but since she didn't have her forefoot and toes anymore, her balance was all wrong. Pierre encouraged her.

« Come on, put some weight on it now. Check how it feels. »

She did as he asked and leaned on her left side. It felt wrong. What was left of her foot didn't move the way it used to. The muscles and ligaments had been reattached in a different way that would eventually allow her to walk, but for the moment she didn't like the perception she had. She wasn't used to her new shape yet and this feeling didn't make things easier.

She remained between the rails for about half an hour, testing her stump and her balance, making tentative steps to walk before Pierre decided that was enough for now. Back in her room, the pains woke up in her foot, but she closed her eyes and concentrated on the scents.

The next three days, Nola came back to the PT room twice a day, gritting her teeth and making progress until Pierre was satisfied and told her it was time for her to get an artificial foot. A lemon-smelling man came with a prosthesis looking very much like a real foot. The week before they had made a mold of her right foot that was used to make this one. The man slipped it on her stub and suddenly it was like she had two feet again. Nola got up, impatient to try it out… and almost fell down. This foot looked like a real one but could hardly play the part. She’d have to get used to that too.

Oliver showed up two days later in the PT room with a surprise.

« Ollie ! »

« Hey Nola. How are you doing ? »

« Not bad actually. »

« You got your new foot. »

« Yes ! It's still hard to walk, but I'm working on it. »

Pierre and Oliver shook hands.

« She's making great progress, I'm proud of her. »

« Thanks, coach. What's in the box ? »

« It's for you. The Applied Sciences Division has a prosthetics department and I’ve asked them to work on a prototype. »

The box that contained… a foot. But unlike the one provided by the hospital, this one was made of a transparent silicone exterior filled with metal and wires.

« Oh, my gosh, Ollie ! It looks like something out of a sci-fi movie ! »

« Want to try it on ? »

« Sure ! »

She slipped the bionic foot on her stump and it fitted just right. She stood up, checked her balance, put some weight on her left leg and took a step.

« This is amazing !  »

« See the small rods ? They’re imitating the bones in the foot and toes. Each of them has its own servo drive and can act in autonomy. Felicity could explain this better than me. »

« Felicity ? »

« My… IT girl. We work together. »

« Oh. Okay. »

Nola kept walking slowly up and down the path, analyzing each movement, rolling and unrolling her new foot.

« It’s a prototype, so it probably needs some adjustments. »

« Some, yes, but it’s pretty good already. No comparison with the rubber one ! »

She took a deep breath, lifted her hands from the railings and took a step unsupported. She wobbled a bit but she took another step.

« That’s gonna do it ! »

Oliver moved the end of the walk and caught her in his arms when she arrived. She laughed and hugged him hard.

« Thank you so much ! This foot is amazing ! »

Pierre admired the prosthetic.

« She’s healing quite well, so I'm recommending leaving the hospital next week. »

« Already ? »

« You're autonomous enough to go back home, Nola. You need to recover your routine. »

« I suppose. »

« The hospital is a safe place, and it's normal to want safety. But you need to learn how to take care of your new self. »

« If you don't want to be alone, you can come at home. You can do all your physical therapy in the gym and the pool. And you can have your own room. »

Oliver bent down to whisper in her ear.

« Unless you want to share mine. »

Nola looked mischievous.

« What would your mom say about that ? »

« We don't have to tell her. Plus she lives in the other aisle. »

Nola laughed.

« Why not ? »

« I'll arrange everything. »

They exchanged a tender kiss that would have turned warmer if they had been alone.

WildFire - Chapter 8

8.

The nurse pushed the drug in her IV, and Nola felt herself start to float. She was still awake, but her sense of smell was dulled. Pierre had left just a moment ago, saying he would come back later, so grapefruit hung in the air. But still no rainforest. Nola closed her eyes and started to drift.

Oliver rushed through the corridor, looking for Nola’s room. He had been so preoccupied with the Undertaking he had almost forgotten her operation was today. He saw a nurse push a bed in front of her, recognised the red hair under the cap.

« Wait ! »

He bent over her and put his hand on her cheek.

« Nola. I’m here. »

Her lids were so heavy, but she managed to open them. Finally, the scent she had been waiting for.

« You got this, you're strong. And I’ll be here when you wake up. »

He put a soft kiss on her lips and let the nurse push her into the OR. Nola fell asleep surrounded by the green.

Oliver stayed in the hospital. The coffee was terrible, but he was here for her, and discomfort was the least of his worries. He thought about what Nola had told him, about responsibilities. The list he had taken from his father's body was what kept him going, what gave him purpose. For five years, he'd had but one idea in his mind, get home. And once home, make sure wrongdoers would pay for their crimes. His father had seen the errors of his ways, but didn't have time to correct his deeds. So it was his duty to honor his father's wishes and make sure justice prevailed.

Dr Kellerman looked confident when he came out of the OR a couple of hours later.

« The surgery went as well as expected. She's in good health, so if everything goes well, she should be back on her own feet in a couple of weeks. »

« Is she awake yet ? »

« No, but you can go see her for a minute as soon as she's in ICU. »

« Thank you doctor. »

Through the window of her room, Oliver watched Nola sleep. She looked paler than usual. His gaze dropped on the other side of the bed. The sheet on the left side was definitely lower. And he did feel responsible.

Nola didn't want to wake up. She was drifting in scents and colors, and though in her mind they were all blurry, it was better than waking up and facing the harsh reality that she wasn't whole anymore. She wanted to go back to her life before the kidnapping. But that would mean no rainforest, and she couldn't bear the idea. She smelled the green amongst the hospital grey and thought some people were really stubborn.

« Come on, Nola, I know you can hear me. Wake up ! »

Oliver took her hand in his and sat on the bed. Nola sighed and looked at him.

« Hello Sleeping Beauty. »

She had to smile.

« Hello Robin Hood. »

His smile froze.

« Sorry, the medication is making me babble. »

« How do you feel ? »

« Fuzzy. »

« I'm allowed five minutes with you. »

« It's usually all you need, right ? »

Oliver laughed. His phone rang, and he checked it.

« Sorry, I have to go. But I'll be back later, okay ? »

« Whenever you want, I'm not going anywhere. »

Nola closed her eyes again once Oliver had left. She didn't want to look, didn't want to see. The pain was erased by the drugs, and she couldn't feel her left leg, so she let the slumber take her under again. She lost the rhythm of night and day. Nurses and doctors came and went, washed her, changed the bandage on her stub. Somebody talked about measurements and prosthetic foot.

She didn't know how much time had passed when Oliver came again. And this time, he wasn't alone, Pierre had joined him. They had reduced the amount of painkillers she received, so her mind was clearer and her sense of smell more accurate. It felt good to see them. Oliver closed the door and leaned on it while Pierre sat down in the chair beside the bed and turned to Nola.

« We have a problem, girl. »

Nola's face closed.

« Doctor K. told me you haven't seen your foot, that you always close your eyes when they come to do the stump care. »

She remained silent, looking far in front of her.

« You have to face the truth, you have to look at your stub and learn how to care for it. That's the way it works. I know how hard it is. But you don't have to do it alone. »

Nola turned to him, saw courage and strength.

« I'm scared. »

« I know. »

He took her hand and held tight while her eyes were filling up. Oliver sat down on her other side and enfolded her in his arms.

« We're here with you. »

Nola closed her eyes, inhaled deeply the rainforest and the grapefruit, and opened her eyes again. Oliver pulled the sheet and uncovered her severed foot. It was tightly bandaged, and noticeably shorter beside her right foot. Her breath hitched and tears fell on her cheeks. She started sobbing silently. Both men couldn't help it but cry with her. Despite his numerous wounds, Oliver couldn’t imagine what it was like to have a part of himself missing. He could barely look at her amputated foot. Pierre wiped his cheeks.

« Good girl ! »

She tried to move, but the bandages didn’t allow for it. She moved her right toes and thought she wouldn’t be able to do that anymore with her left.

« How do you feel ? »

« I don’t know. Weird. »

« I promise you, one day soon you will see yourself as whole. I’m not saying you won’t miss your foot, hell, I miss my legs every day. But it will feel like yourself. »

The nurse who came in smelled like lavender. Nola had scented her before, but she couldn’t remember her face.

« Oh, good, you’re ready ! »

Oliver put a kiss in her hair and left. Pierre remained to help her deal with what was coming. Nola didn’t like touching her scar, but she clenched her teeth and learned the right way to care for her stump.

« I’m very proud of you, Nola. Our meeting’s tonight, I’ll tell everybody I saw you. We’re all thinking about you. Stay strong, girl. »
